Salary Range: $35000-$45000

The individual in this role will support and propose cyber-physical research activities in the Electric Power Grid through engineering/designing OT technology experimental environments to investigate cyber-physical interactions. This work will be a mixture of fundamental and applied research that aids in advancing the understanding and defense of our nation’s infrastructure.

Specific duties and responsibilities for the Cyber-Physical Research Engineer (Power Systems) include:

Research

  • Propose and support advanced scientific research
  • Design and build experimental testbed environments to aid research validation
  • Install and configure power system testbed hardware and related software
  • Determine hardware and software requirements and recommendations to meet research challenges, aiding in the development of solutions if no commercial option is available
  • Work with students, faculty, staff, and other researchers to propose and execute research efforts to advance the state of science
  • Perform HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) power system studies, such as power flow, transient stability and EMTP using Opal-RT and RTDS

Administrative

  • Assist and support the power engineering activities to achieve scientific research
  • Create and maintain documentation for testbed configurations, systems, studies and experiments
  • Produce documentation, project reports, training, and other written material related to research efforts
  • Interact with industry partners while fostering a deeper research collaboration

Desired Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering with a power system emphasis, or a related scientific field
  • Experience designing substation architectures and deployable solutions
  • Experience with power system design and analysis, such as power flow studies and transient stability studies
  • Experience with substation design and implementation, such as protection systems and equipment selection

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or above in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering with a power system emphasis, or a related scientific Two or more years related work experience
  • Experience with network communications and cyber security
  • Experience designing and conducting HIL simulation using Opal-RT and RTDS
  • Hands-on experience with installing and configuring power system hardware and software (e.g., ABB, SEL, GE, Novatech)
  • Experience with power system protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, 61850)
  • Experience and interest in DER, Microgrids, FACTS, and other emerging topics
  • Experience with data analysis to support validation of experiment results
  • Experience with project management and time management
  • ICS vendor equipment training (e.g., configuring, using, and architecting systems)
  • EIT or PE certification
  • Ability to work on a team and individually
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, e.g. writing proposals or presenting work
  • Understanding of and capability to do electrical control wiring
